A Dance with the Universe

I first published this four years ago. My daughter is now a Fulbright Scholar teaching in Thailand, and my mother-in-law has descended into the house of mirrors that is Alzheimer's. Yet, I am deeply moved by how much remains the same - as truth tends to do. As you look out at the horizon that is 2018, I hope this truth touches you.

"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."  ~Antoine de Saint-Exupery

As I reflect back on the holidays, I am filled with love and gratitude and a sense of rightness.

My daughter's joyful texts and photos from Thailand: What is that feeling? Joy? Completeness? Relief? Love? These don't begin to touch the size and depth and exquisiteness of this feeling.

The moment my father-in-law - now robbed of his treasured independence by the ravages of dementia - opens his card announcing a donation to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in his name. Through unguarded tears, he once again declares this small token the very best of his Christmas gifts. Precious? Touching? Sure, but so much more. What is this thing we experience together in that moment?

Christmas dinner with my re-formed family: my father-in-law now secure and loved across town, my mother-in-law, struggling now to remember what was last said, my son and his now fully (and joyfully) integrated partner, and my wife, who somehow glows even brighter than when she was young and new. Unbounded love seeps into every corner of the room.

How does one describe this experience of full/empty, real/unreal, blessed/uncertain?

There is nothing to do but surrender, to be filled-up, overflowing, overwhelmed. Surely this is as close to Source as I have ever been.

"What is essential is invisible to the eye."

That's what true creation is: an awakening, a dance between the visible and invisible, between control and surrender.

Life - at least an inspired life - is not a solo performance; it's a dance with the Universe.

And each year, no matter what, the Universe delivers the miracle of a brand new invitation.
